THE PULSE: Hysterectomy Thruths

Jodi Davis, Christine Clifford and Kay Kedding have experienced the ups and downs of a hysterectomy – removal of the uterus – but all three women endured the experience for different reasons.

Davis had a hysterectomy 25 years ago. When she began to hemorrhage, her doctor advised she have the procedure before her next menstrual period to avoid extreme, life-threatening bleeding.

Clifford underwent surgery 10 years ago as a preventative measure – Clifford was at risk for developing ovarian cancer.

Kedding's cycle was so irregular and erratic, she underwent surgery 12 years ago.

Dr. Archelle Georgiou spoke with Dr.  James Presthus from Minnesota Gynecology and Surgery about the risks and benefits as well as several misconceptions associated with the surgery.

A takeaway message: Be proactive and remember, you are your best care provider. Ask your doctor, "If I was your mother, if I was your sister, what would you advise?"
